Pres Announces Compensation for Relocated Residents, Outlines Development Projects Maamendhoo, Maabaidhoo, Dhan’bidhoo, and Mundoo

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced last night that MVR 50,000 will be credited to residents who relocated to Gan, Laamu Atoll, alongside plans to construct 300 new housing units in the area.
Speaking to Gan residents during his ongoing tour of the atoll, the President said a total of MVR 8.45 million will be distributed to beneficiaries at MVR 50,000 per person, following assessments by the relevant ministries.
He confirmed that 100 housing units will be built under a newly formalised agreement, 100 are currently under development, and a further 100 are scheduled for construction this year, making Gan one of the country’s largest housing projects.
President Muizzu also outlined broader development plans for Maamendhoo, Maabaidhoo, Dhan’bidhoo, and Mundoo, highlighting the Administration’s ongoing commitment to infrastructure, housing, and community development across Laamu Atoll.
He made this announcement during his address to Gan residents, as part of his ongoing tour of the atoll. He also outlined development plans for Maamendhoo, Maabaidhoo, Dhan’bidhoo, and Mundoo.

In addition to housing, President Muizzu highlighted plans to boost tourism in underdeveloped atolls, including a resort development agreement for Gasgan’du Finolhu and other phased projects. He also formalised key infrastructure projects on Gan, such as shore protection, road modernisation, the upgrade of Gan Regional Hospital to tertiary status, a new Sports Complex, harbour expansion, water and sewage improvements, and the establishment of a Rehabilitation Centre.
The President confirmed the creation of a Public Works Unit on the island and full police coverage across all inhabited islands, fulfilling a presidential pledge. He met with the Gan Island Council, Women’s Development Committee, and local institutions to discuss priorities and upcoming projects.
Tourism and Development Opportunities in Maamendhoo
During the visit to Maamendhoo, President Muizzu described a planned five-star resort and hotel school in Hulhimendhoo as a key opportunity for current and aspiring tourism sector workers, particularly the youth of Maamendhoo. An agreement was signed between the Maldives National University and Maldives Airports Company Limited to establish the resort and hotel school. Additional projects were also formalised, including harbour development, land reclamation, shore protection, road upgrades, a new Council Secretariat, and expanded laboratory services at the local health centre. The President assured residents that work on the Police Station will begin this year and that school and sports projects will be included in the 2026 national budget.
Maabaidhoo Health Centre to Operate 24 Hours

President Muizzu announced plans to upgrade the Maabaidhoo Health Centre to provide 24-hour services from next year, with funding for additional staff included in the 2026 national budget. Agreements were also formalised for the Maabaidhoo shore protection project, a multi-purpose school hall, and the island’s football ground. Despite delays caused by heavy rainfall affecting other projects, the President assured all initiatives would proceed as planned.
Dhan’bidhoo Road Project to Follow Sewerage Solution
The President stated that road development in Laamu Dhan’bidhoo will commence only after a sustainable solution to the island’s sewerage system is implemented. Agreements were signed with the Road Development Corporation Limited for the project, alongside plans to construct a 500-capacity mosque and provide a sea ambulance. The 2026 national budget will also support education and sports initiatives.

Mundoo Harbour and Community Upgrades Confirmed
President Muizzu confirmed that a new harbour in L. Mundoo will receive funding in the next national budget. He also pledged improvements to healthcare services, school facilities—including air conditioning and renovations—and the development of sporting amenities such as a women’s volleyball court.
The President engaged directly with residents, Island Councils, Women’s Development Committees, and local institutions to discuss community priorities across all islands, reaffirming the Government’s commitment to comprehensive development throughout Laamu Atoll.
