The Maldivian government has strongly condemned the preliminary approval by the Israeli Knesset of two draft laws that would impose Israeli sovereignty over the Occupied West Bank and seek to legitimise Israeli control over illegal settlements.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on behalf of the Government of the Maldives, the nation described the move as a dangerous escalation that threatens prospects for a peaceful resolution in the region.
“The Maldives considers this decision by the Israeli Knesset as a dangerous escalation that constitutes a clear and serious violation of international law. It further jeopardises the prospects for a peaceful resolution of the conflict in the region,” the statement said.
The Maldives reiterated its call on the international community to take urgent and concrete action to end such provocations, safeguard the rights of the Palestinian people, and hold Israel accountable for all violations committed in the occupied Palestinian territory.
The government reaffirmed its firm and consistent support for the just and legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to self-determination and an independent and sovereign State of Palestine based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Israel agreed to a ceasefire on 10 October following continued violence against Palestinians. According to Al Jazeera, as of 20 October, Israeli strikes in Gaza have killed nearly 100 Palestinians and wounded 230.
