The Committee on Independent Institutions of Parliament has endorsed Mohamed Farshath for the post of President of the newly established Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission (Media Commission).

Farshath, a former member of the Civil Service Commission, was appointed to the Media Commission on Tuesday alongside former Broadcasting Commission President Safa Shafeeq and former member Aminath Saraahath Izzath. Their appointments were made under the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation Act, following parliamentary endorsement earlier in the day.

Under the new Act, the Media Commission comprises seven members—three appointed by Parliament and four selected by the media sector. Two members represent broadcasters, while the other two represent print or online media outlets. The President of the Commission is to be elected by Parliament, and the Vice-President will be chosen by Commission members through a secret ballot.

The four seats representing the media industry were filled without a formal election due to uncontested nominations. Former Broadcom members Zamath Ahmed Waheed and Abdulazeez Ibrahim were appointed as representatives for broadcasters, while Hussain Shageef and Simaha Naseem were named to represent other media outlets.

The parliamentary committee interviewed all seven members of the Commission before endorsing Farshath as its first President. The endorsement will be forwarded to Parliament for final approval in the coming days.
