Voting Underway in Addu City Referendum on Council Jurisdiction

The referendum vote in Addu City to determine the jurisdiction of the Addu City Council’s composition has started this morning.
Voting will continue until 4:00 p.m. today, with the Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) set to announce the final results tomorrow. A total of 18 ballot boxes have been placed for the vote — three in Hulhudhoo, three in Meedhoo, five in Feydhoo, and seven in Malé.

According to the ECM, 320 people had cast their votes by 9:00 a.m., representing 3.34 percent of the 9,256 eligible voters.

The referendum seeks public opinion on whether the three islands of Hulhudhoo, Meedhoo, and Feydhoo should each have their own island councils, separate from the Addu City Council.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu amended the referendum questions in a decree issued on October 13, revising an earlier decree from 6 October. The updated version focuses solely on whether each island should have an independent council, removing questions from the previous decree that asked whether residents preferred a combined council with Hithadhoo.
