The government has commenced the removal of chairs, tables, and trees from the pavements of various areas in Hulhumalé as part of a campaign aimed at addressing issues faced by pedestrians.

The Hulhumalé Development Corporation (HDC) said the initiative seeks to provide a long-term solution to problems caused by flooding and the deterioration of roads, which hampers proper drainage of rainwater. The large trees planted within hedges have also contributed to these challenges.

The programme, which is divided into 12 zones, is being conducted in collaboration with the HDC, the Maldives Food and Drug Authority, and the Hulhumale Police. Approximately 50 employees are expected to participate, with Phase 1 scheduled for completion by January.

The HDC has already ordered the removal of tables and chairs placed on the streets. Owners who fail to remove their items will have them cleared by the HDC, which has stated it will not be responsible for any damage to property.

The HDC emphasised that the campaign requires the cooperation of residents and businesses, highlighting that the initiative cannot be successfully implemented by the corporation alone.
