President Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to develop 800 housing units in Lhaviyani Atoll’s Naifaru as part of his administration’s efforts to expand housing across the Maldives.
During his visit to the island, President Muizzu reaffirmed his government’s commitment to fulfilling all pledges made to Naifaru residents, noting that housing remains one of the administration’s top priorities. He said the 800-unit housing project will be completed during the current presidential term, addressing long-standing concerns over limited housing availability on the island.
The President also highlighted that the housing development will be supported by a 45-hectare land reclamation project, which aims to create additional space for housing, public infrastructure, and urban development. He said the reclaimed land will play a key role in transforming Naifaru into a more modern and sustainable island community.
Naifaru has seen multiple housing projects in the past. In 2010, the then government completed a project involving building 25 row houses under a national housing scheme. Later, in 2021, Rasheed Carpentry & Construction completed a 100-unit housing project worth MVR 72.3 million. Earlier this year, the Ministry of Finance also opened bids for the design and construction of 400 housing units. The practical work of the projects has not begun.
The newly announced 800-unit project is set to become the largest housing development undertaken on the island to date.
