The Maldives Police Service has released the names of four individuals detained in connection with the robbery at Velana International Airport (VIA). Authorities also confirmed that the speedboat used by the suspects to flee the scene has been recovered and is now in police custody.
The suspects are identified as Maazin Moosa, 25, from Reysham, L. Maavah; Ahmed Raihaan Naeem, 20, from M. Chorus, Malé; Ibrahim Anoof, 24, from Alivilaage, K. Guraidhoo; and Husain Shahudh, 30, from Alivilaage, K. Guraidhoo. The court has remanded all four for five days pending further investigation.
The robbery occurred early Monday when a group of masked individuals threatened two bank employees and stole a suitcase containing cash as they attempted to enter the airport’s newly opened Terminal 1. The incident was reported at 4:45 a.m. A police spokesperson noted that no police escort was present with the bank staff, as the bank had not requested security in advance.
Police have not disclosed the total amount stolen or the identity of the bank. They have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and additional details will be released as the case progresses.
