Zamath Ahmed Waheed has been elected as the Vice President of the newly formed Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission (Media Commission), established under the Media and Broadcasting Regulation Act.
According to an official from the Media Commission, Zamath, who represents the broadcasting sector, secured the position after a close contest against fellow member Hussain Shaqeef, the former president of the now-dissolved Maldives Media Council. Zamath won the internal election with four votes in favour and three against.
Under the provisions of the new Act, the Vice President is elected by the Commission members through a secret ballot. Meanwhile, the President of the Commission is chosen by Parliament from among the seven members — three appointed by Parliament and four selected by the media sector. Of these, two represent broadcasters, and the remaining two represent print or online media outlets.
Parliament yesterday endorsed Mohamed Farshath, a former member of the Civil Service Commission, as the President of the Media Commission. Other appointed members include Safa Shafeeq, former president of the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom); Aminath Saraahath Izzath; Simaha Naseem and Abdulazeez Ibrahim.
