President Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the 23-hectare land reclamation project in Kaafu Atoll Dhiffushi, will be completed within 12 months.
Addressing residents during his visit to the island, the President said Dhiffushi — one of the most densely populated islands in Kaafu Atoll — would see new housing, tourism, and infrastructure projects developed on the reclaimed land.
The President also inaugurated several development initiatives on the island, including the commencement of practical work on a waste management facility, a fitness and recreation centre, a multi-purpose school hall, and other infrastructure projects. Service provision from the newly completed STELCO powerhouse was also launched as part of the visit.
He further announced plans to build a new mosque and police station, as well as to install buoys for sports fishing — all scheduled for completion this year. The President also revealed that US dollar ATM services will be introduced on the island by the end of March next year.
According to President Muizzu, the upcoming 2026 national budget includes allocations for additional development projects, including a volleyball court, a handball court, road development, and the upgrading of Dhiffushi’s health centre into a 24-hour facility.
The Dhiffushi land reclamation project was awarded to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) in June 2023, during former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s term. MTCC began practical work on the project in August of that year, yet the project has remained unfinished.
