Maldivian Foreign Minister Dr Abdulla Khaleel has declined to disclose details of the Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) signed between the Maldives and China in September, informing Parliament that the information will be made public once formal agreements are finalised.
The Maldives and China exchanged 11 MOUs on 2 September during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s official visit to Beijing. The President’s Office had announced that the agreements aimed to enhance cooperation in areas such as economic development, infrastructure, renewable energy, and capacity building, though no further details were released at the time.
Maavah MP Ahmed Shakir of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) had requested copies of the MOUs. In response, Dr. Khaleel stated in a written communication on Wednesday that discussions between the two governments are ongoing to convert the MOUs into formal agreements.
He noted that the details would be shared with the relevant authorities once the discussions are concluded.
The President’s Office previously said the exchange of MOUs reflected the shared commitment of both nations to strengthen their long-standing partnership and pursue new opportunities for sustainable development and mutual prosperity.
