The linked islands of Addu City are once again facing power outages, as Fenaka Corporation reported a technical issue affecting the city’s central power station.
According to the company, power was first cut off in Maradhoo and Feydhoo due to a fault in one of the engines. The announcement was made at 12:56 through a message sent to the FENAKA Addu branch’s Viber group. Fenaka stated that its technical team is working to resolve the issue and apologised for any inconvenience caused to residents.
As part of load management measures, Fenaka later announced additional power cuts across several areas. Electricity was scheduled to be cut for one-hour intervals in different regions, beginning with the Medhuvalu School area at 14:00, followed by the BML area at 14:20. The MNU area and Addu City Council were also affected at 15:00, with further disruptions planned for other locations from 15:30 onwards.
Addu City, home to the largest residential population outside Malé, has been experiencing frequent power outages for several months. Despite FENAKA’s installation of new generators — a 1.8-megawatt unit in February, a 1-megawatt unit in March, and another 1.8-megawatt unit later that same month — the city continues to face electricity disruptions.
FENAKA has previously stated that an additional 15 kilowatts of power generation capacity is required to meet the city’s energy needs. Many residents expect the problem to be resolved once a new power house, currently awarded to a Chinese company, becomes operational. However, physical work on the project has yet to commence.
