Police Report MVR 1.3 Million Lost to Scams in October

The Maldives Police Service has reported financial losses amounting to MVR 1.3 million from 165 scam cases recorded in October.

According to police statistics, the majority of incidents involved e-commerce and online business fraud, accounting for 86 cases. Other reported scams included 25 cases of currency exchange fraud, 17 cases of impersonation, 15 cases related to phishing, vishing, and job scams, along with 22 cases categorised under other types of fraud.

Of the total losses, only MVR 400,000 has been recovered so far. Police said 84 of the reported cases have been resolved.

The scams were carried out through various methods, including phone calls, phishing links, online messaging platforms, and social media sites such as eBay and Facebook Marketplace.

Authorities continue to urge the public to remain cautious, as the number of scam victims remains high.
