Defense Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon has stated that the current administration has brought an end to 15 years of neglect in the Maldives’ defence sector.

Speaking at the official Victory Day reception on Monday morning, Minister Ghassan highlighted that Maldivians have united every 3 November since 1988 to honour the country’s victory over a terrorist attack. He paid tribute to the sacrifice of martyrs who gave their lives to defend the nation and acknowledged the commitment of citizens who contributed to national security.

Minister Ghassan emphasised the role of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in transforming the nation’s defence policy. He noted that on 17 November 2023, the President established a decisive framework to strengthen the Maldives’ independence and sovereignty and to modernise the military into a force capable of defending the country.

Over the past two years, the administration has achieved multiple milestones in the defence sector. These include the provision of allowances to the families of martyrs, recruitment and training of new soldiers, and acquisition of new vessels to enhance the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Marine Corps and Coastguard.

The Minister addressed new recruits, urging them to recognise the responsibilities they are preparing to assume and to remain committed in order to secure the nation’s full independence. He also reminded serving soldiers that Victory Day is a time to demonstrate pride and honour, reaffirming that Maldivian personnel remain dedicated to defending the country for as long as it exists.
