President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has issued a decree authorising the establishment and operationalisation of the first air station of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Air Corps.
Under the new order, the MNDF Air Corps is tasked with establishing the air station to support airspace surveillance, monitor the nation’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), and carry out Air Corps operations. The Decree also mandates 24-hour continuous airspace surveillance over the EEZ to ensure operational effectiveness and strengthen national security.
The MNDF Air Corps was originally established on 15 March 2024 through Presidential Decree No. 5/2024. The new air station represents a significant step in expanding the Corps’ capabilities and enhancing Maldives’ defence infrastructure. The Maldives brought Bayraktar TB2 drones from Turkey, each six metres long with a 12-metre wingspan and 700 kilograms of communications equipment capable of transmitting up to 300 kilometres.
