Police Recover Property Worth MVR 5 Million in Male’ During October

The Maldives Police Service has reported that they recovered lost and stolen property valued at MVR 5 million during October, with the majority of the recovered items being missing motorcycles.

According to police statistics released on Wednesday, officers retrieved 110 motorcycles worth MVR 4.9 million, 31 mobile phones worth MVR 302,830, and 12 electronic devices valued at MVR 62,565. In addition, police investigated 32 cases of money theft amounting to MVR 324,344 and 65 other cases involving property worth MVR 164,866.

Motorcycles continued to be the most commonly recovered item for the second consecutive month, with police having retrieved 90 motorcycles in September.

The report also noted that two foreign nationals were handed over to the Maldives Immigration during the month.

In terms of traffic management, a total of 520 vehicles were towed from the capital in October, compared to 702 in September. The majority were removed due to illegal parking, accounting for 247 cases. Other reasons included driving without a licence (108), dangerous driving (21), use of altered registration numbers (18), and abandoned vehicles (5).

Police officers also conducted 1,139 hours of foot patrols, inspected 26,262 premises, and set up 75 vehicle checkpoints and 16 traffic management points across the city.

A total of 4,633 individuals were stopped and questioned by frontline officers, with 4,555 found to have prior criminal records.

As part of community policing initiatives, officers carried out 1,364 interactions with residents to strengthen public cooperation and safety awareness.

Male’, which houses a large portion of the country’s population, continues to report the highest number of criminal cases. Police have increased their visibility in the capital to improve security and enhance access to assistance for residents.
