The government has inaugurated the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Air Corps’ first air station in Gan, Addu, marking a major step in strengthening the nation’s defence infrastructure.
The inauguration ceremony, held on Wednesday, was attended by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who outlined his administration’s defence policy and highlighted the link between military development and national progress.
President Muizzu stated that building a strong and capable defence force is essential for the Maldives to achieve resilient economic growth and attract foreign investment. He emphasised that a secure environment is fundamental to ensuring national sovereignty and fostering investor confidence.
The President described the modernisation of the armed forces as a national priority and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing the MNDF’s capacity across all divisions, including the Air Corps, Coast Guard, and land forces. The development plan includes the procurement of advanced equipment and significant upgrades to existing military infrastructure.
He also stated that the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) will acquire military aircraft next year as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s defence capabilities.
The new air station in Gan will improve the country’s airspace management and defence readiness. It will also host a dedicated training centre, while MNDF bases in Girifushi and Maafilaafushi are set for upgrades to meet modern operational standards.
President Muizzu further noted that next year’s state budget allocates funding for expanded training and capacity-building programmes, aimed at developing human resources within the armed forces. He expressed confidence that strengthening defence capabilities will contribute to the Maldives’ long-term goal of becoming a developed nation by 2040.
The government has been increasing military expenditures, citing national security concerns for keeping specific allocations confidential. The proposed state budget for 2026 allocates MVR 2.8 billion to defence spending, representing four percent of the total budget.
The largest recent military expenditure is a USD 37 million (MVR 570 million) contract to acquire six military drones from Turkey. Next year’s budget also includes MVR 99 million for private insurance coverage for these drones.
