Police statistics released show that 35 individuals were fined last month for vape-related offences. Of these, 15 people were penalised for using vape and e-cigarettes, 19 for possession, and one person for buying or selling such products.
The total fines included MVR 104,000 for usage, MVR 97,000 for possession, and MVR 20,000 for buying and selling. An additional MVR 5,000 was collected for other vape-related offences.
Vaping was officially banned in the Maldives on 15 December last year, following concerns over the rising use of e-cigarettes among the population, including schoolchildren. It is now illegal to import, trade, or distribute vape products in the country, and authorities continue to take action against violators.
Under the Tobacco Control Act, individuals who give a vape for free can be fined MVR 10,000, users face fines of MVR 5,000, and sellers can be fined MVR 20,000, with an additional MVR 10,000 for each unit sold.
