An expatriate who was granted conditional release after being arrested on suspicion of selling used oil discarded by resorts has been identified in a court order as a Bangladeshi national married to a Maldivian woman.

The Maldives Police Service arrested five Bangladeshi men from Hulhumalé last Thursday following a tip-off about oil containers being transferred from a dinghy to a pickup truck near the Hulhumalé MPL Container Jetty.

Authorities discovered 46 containers of used oil during a search of a boat, a dinghy, and a pickup connected to the suspects. The operation was carried out after the Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) issued directions prohibiting the sale or reuse of discarded oil from resorts.

The suspects were identified as Al Ameen Boyati, 37, Zulaal Mia, 32, Mohammed Russel Mia, 34, and Manvar Hossain, 45. Four of them were remanded in custody for ten days, while the fifth suspect, a 43-year-old Bangladeshi man, was released under conditions.

According to the court order, the released suspect resides in the Maldives with a valid visa and is married to a Maldivian. The court noted that evidence had been submitted supporting his claim that he was merely a pickup driver involved in transporting the containers. However, the specific conditions of his release were not disclosed.

Last month, the MFDA warned that legal action would be taken against individuals or businesses found using oil discarded by resorts for food preparation. The authority issued the warning following multiple complaints that some cafés and restaurants in Malé were reusing such oil in cooking.
