MV+ News Desk | November 10, 2025

Swedish technology company Candela has announced the introduction of its battery-powered hydrofoil ferry, the Candela P-12, in the Maldives.

Maldivian tour operator Ego Shuttle has placed an order for 10 Candela P-12 vessels, with plans to deploy them next year. This will mark the first time electric hydrofoil ferries operate in Maldivian waters. The vessels will primarily transport passengers between Velana International Airport and distant resort islands.

In preparation for the rollout, Ego Shuttle will establish a logistics hub and provide green job training for Maldivian staff to operate and maintain the vessels.

The Candela P-12 is an 11.99-metre ferry powered by a 378 kW battery. Each vessel accommodates up to 30 passengers and is equipped with air conditioning, Wi-Fi, entertainment screens, and charging ports.

Using hydrofoil technology, the ferry lifts 1.5 metres above the water, which reduces drag and energy consumption by up to 80 percent compared to diesel-powered boats. The vessels can reach speeds of 46 kilometres per hour, offering a smooth and quiet ride designed to minimise vibration and seasickness.

Once operational, Ego Shuttle will manage the world’s largest fleet of electric hydrofoil ferries. The initiative positions the Maldives as a pioneer in sustainable marine transport, setting a new standard for eco-friendly tourism in island nations.
