The agreement was signed by State Minister of Health Khadeeja Abdul Samad Abdullah and GITEC Consulting Group’s Director of Health and Social Infrastructure, Christian Jaminon.
According to the Health Ministry, the USD 1.23 million project includes a feasibility study to be completed within 90 days and design work within 145 days. GITEC will also prepare tender documents for the construction phase, supervise construction, and oversee maintenance work during the defect liability period.
Health Minister Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim noted that the establishment of a national-level laboratory is a key step in enhancing the country’s healthcare system. He said the lack of such a facility has previously caused delays and high costs, as samples had to be sent abroad for analysis.
The new facility, to be developed in Hulhumalé, will replace the existing National Health Laboratory currently operating within the Ministry of Health building, which has limited space. The planned 12-storey building will include an advanced Level 3 biosafety laboratory equipped with modern technology.
Jointly funded by the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Government of Maldives, the project will be implemented in two main phases. The first phase will cover feasibility studies and design work, while the second phase, scheduled for next year, will focus on construction and equipment installation.
The new laboratory will be capable of conducting virology testing for biosafety levels 2 and 3, as well as bacteriology, food, and drug analyses. It will also expand services to include testing of imported and exported goods and support research in mycology, entomology, and parasitology.
The facility will also house the National Influenza Centre, and the Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) will be relocated to the new building. Designed to provide a high-quality working environment, the building will include a multipurpose hall, library, gymnasium, recreation and childcare facilities, staff accommodation, cafeteria, prayer hall, and vehicle parking. Dedicated spaces will also be allocated for waste management, storage, cold-chain facilities, and a biomedical workshop.
