President Muizzu commended all those involved in the project for their dedicated efforts and highlighted its importance to the community. He noted that the ongoing formulation of a Land Use Plan would ensure that the reclaimed land is allocated effectively and in ways that best serve local needs.

According to the President’s Office, President Muizzu reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to Gulhi’s development, and said that housing and other essential sectors would remain key priorities.

During the ceremony, an agreement was signed between the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure and the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) for the development of Gulhi Harbour. The President assured that the harbour project, like the reclamation effort, would be carried out swiftly and efficiently.

Addressing public concerns over land designated for tourism, President Muizzu said a solution would be reached in line with the wishes of the residents, within legal frameworks, and without financial strain on the state.

The Gulhi Land Reclamation and Coastal Protection Project was completed within 630 days by MTCC, adding 10.15 hectares of land to the island. It included a 940-metre revetment, a 362-metre geo bag revetment, and an 88-metre groyne.

Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, Dr Abdulla Muththalib, presented a commemorative plaque to the Gulhi Island Council at the ceremony.

The harbour development project is expected to be completed within 530 days, involving improvements to harbour depth and channels, repairs to existing structures, and the construction of a new concrete jetty.
