President Dr Mohamed Muizzu visited the Rasmalé reclamation site yesterday to review progress on the Rasmalé Land Reclamation and Coastal Protection Project, the largest single initiative aimed at addressing the Maldives’ housing needs from one location.

The Government is implementing the project in phases to provide a transformative solution to the national housing challenge. Work across three sites is advancing rapidly, with Site J fully completed, while 25.53 per cent of Site L and 20.09 per cent of Site C have been finished, according to the President’s Office.

On Tuesday, speaking at the Republic Day ceremony, President Muizzu announced that the reclaimed land will provide 15,000 plots for housing within the Greater Malé Region in the next five months. He announced that land allocations will be made for Malé natives, long-term residents, and those listed on the Malé Register.

He had emphasised a family housing initiative prioritising individuals over 18 without homes and reaffirmed his commitment to support groups such as single parents, people with disabilities, children who have lost their mothers, institutional staff, and tourism workers. Dedicated plots and housing units will be allocated under the upcoming schemes.

The Rasmalé project, located in Kaafu Atoll’s Fushidhiggaru Lagoon, began in December 2023 and will reclaim 1,009 hectares to develop an environmentally sustainable eco-city. President Muizzu was accompanied by Cabinet Ministers and senior officials during the visit, receiving updates from project teams on the latest progress and ongoing works.
