The Ministry of Construction, Housing, and Infrastructure has reported significant progress on the Thilamalé Bridge project, stating that 66.26 percent of the works have been completed, indicating steady advancement towards the government’s target of linking Malé, Vilimalé, and Gulhifalhu by next year.
Key developments include the completion of all pillars between Malé and Vilimalé, with work now focusing on linking the bridge’s upper structure. To date, 98 percent of the pillar upper structures have been completed, and 263 offshore piles have been installed. In addition, 36 percent of the bridge’s main pillars are connected, with 437 cast segments already joined between Vilimalé and Malé.
The Gulhifalhu segment remains a critical focus, with 912 of the 1,222 deck segments required to connect the bridge pillars already cast. Work has also begun on road connectivity, including the construction of a causeway linking the bridge to Gulhifalhu, alongside ongoing shore protection efforts.
Spanning 6.7 kilometres, the Thilamale’ Bridge is one of the Maldives’ largest infrastructure projects. The government is accelerating efforts to meet next year’s deadline for the Malé-Vilimalé connection, which is expected to significantly improve mobility across the Greater Malé region.
