Ooredoo Maldives’ Chief Commercial Officer, Hussain Niyaz has emphasized that digital progress ultimately depends on people rather than technology, and that anyone willing to embrace change has a role in shaping the Digital Maldives,
Speaking at the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) Conference panel “Rethinking Economic Growth Beyond Tourism.” The event, held on 16 November at Villa Nautica, Niyaz said that digital finance has become a key equaliser for geographically scattered nations like the Maldives.
“Digital finance is one of the greatest equalisers in a dispersed nation like ours. With m-Faisaa soon integrated with PayPal, we’re enabling freelancers, artisans and small businesses from every island to access global markets and new income streams,” he said.
He noted that significant challenges remain, including infrastructure costs, digital skill shortages and fragmented systems.
“No single player can do it alone. Strong private-sector partnerships are essential to expanding connectivity, digital tools and financial inclusion, so that innovation reaches every island,” he added.
He reiterated Ooredoo’s commitment to expanding nationwide connectivity and financial inclusion through platforms such as m-Faisaa. The upcoming PayPal–m-Faisaa integration is expected to improve access to international payments for freelancers, guesthouses, small merchants and creative entrepreneurs.
Ooredoo Maldives said it will continue collaborating with government agencies, regulators and the private sector to support a more resilient and digitally empowered economy.
