The Utility Regulatory Authority (URA) has confirmed that the water supplied in Fuvahmulah City meets required standards. In a brief statement, the Authority said that the water provided by FENAKA Corporation to the city complies with URA’s supply water standards.

The statement follows a previous announcement by the Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA), which said that water samples collected from various areas of Fuvahmulah were analysed in connection with concerns over FENAKA’s supply. The MFDA confirmed that the results indicate the water meets drinking water standards set by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Despite these assurances, the Fuvahmulah City Council has decided to file a lawsuit against FENAKA Corporation to ensure the safety of the water supplied to the city.
The water service was completely shut off last Monday after tests suggested possible contamination. The Council expressed concern that Fenaka resumed supply last Thursday without confirming its safety.
In a statement released yesterday, the Council said it had repeatedly raised the issue with relevant government authorities. However, as the concerns were not addressed, service interruptions continued, and complaints about contamination increased from mid-October, prompting the Council to request water testing from authorities.
The Council noted that although FENAKA claimed supply resumed after MFDA confirmation of safety, the results of these analyses have not been shared with the Council to date.
The Council emphasised that providing safe water is a human right and that residents are being deprived of this basic necessity. They stated that the matter would be submitted to the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) and announced plans to file a lawsuit seeking a court order requiring Fenaka to ensure the water supplied meets all relevant standards set by the Utility Regulatory Authority and other institutions.
The Council also appealed to FENAKA not to resume water supply until proposed network improvements are completed, submitted to the Utility Authority, and permission is granted and communicated to the Council.
