MV+ News Desk | November 20, 2025

The government has opened applications for drivers to join the government-initiated taxi line service.

In an announcement shared on social media, the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) said it is seeking 407 drivers, including 285 full-time and 122 part-time positions. The company added that the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation will prioritise applicants already registered in the taxi driver register at the ministry.

MTCC outlined the responsibilities for the role, which include safely transporting passengers, completing assigned trips, adhering to company policies and government regulations, conducting routine vehicle inspections, reporting any faults or accidents, and coordinating with operations staff. Applicants must hold a B1 or B2 licence.

MTCC has not included information about the salary for either the part-time drivers or full-time drivers in the job opening. The application deadline has been set for 17 December.

The recruitment comes as the Government prepares to modernise the existing taxi system, which Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen had previously described as outdated and unable to meet public demand. He noted issues with service standards, quality and discipline, despite around 1,500 vehicles being registered for taxi use.

The new service will be rolled out in three phases, beginning later this year in Malé, Hulhumalé and Velana International Airport. The second phase (2026–2027) will extend to Villimalé and Thilafushi, while the third phase (2028–2029) will expand to Ras Malé, Giraavaru, Addu, Fuvahmulah and Kulhudhuffushi. The service will initially deploy 100 electric vehicles and operate in a model similar to platforms such as Uber and Grab, while remaining under government regulatory control.
