President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has inaugurated the first Urban Primary Healthcare Centre in the Malé region, opened yesterday in Maafannu.
The ceremony, held at the new facility, was attended by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed. The event also marked the completion and official handover of the centre, developed under the Malé City Group of Hospitals. The project was contracted to the Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO).
According to the President’s Office, after assuming charge of the centre, Abdul Razzaq Haleem, Chief Executive Officer of the Malé City Group of Hospitals, thanked the President and said the establishment of such facilities would significantly improve services provided to the public under the President’s initiative.
Under the Government’s health policy, Urban Primary Healthcare Centres are designed to focus on disease prevention and support healthier communities, the President’s Office said. The Maafannu centre will offer GP consultations, referrals to specialists for cases requiring advanced care, and national public health programmes. Its Child Health Clinic will provide growth and development monitoring and routine vaccinations, while other clinics will promote healthy habits, support mental well-being, and assist people wishing to quit smoking.
The Government plans to establish five additional centres in the Malé region—three in Malé and two in Hulhumalé—as part of its emphasis on preventive healthcare. The health sector is set to receive the highest allocation in the 2026 budget.
The new Urban Primary Healthcare Centre has been opened at the office used for the Coral Boulevard project during former president Abdulla Yamee’s administration.
