China has announced 20 scholarship opportunities for Maldivian students under the Chinese Scholarship Council programme, including 11 positions for PhD studies.
According to the Ministry of Higher Education, the scholarships will be offered for the 2026–2027 academic years and facilitated through the Maldivian Embassy in China. The opportunity is open to both new applicants and students already pursuing higher education in Chinese institutions.
Of the 20 slots, five are designated for new students and 15 for those currently studying in China. New applicants will be able to apply for two bachelor’s programmes, two master’s programmes, and one PhD position. Existing students may apply for five master’s and ten PhD scholarships.
Eligibility criteria vary by level of study. Bachelor’s applicants must be under 25 years of age by February and must hold either five ‘C’ passes in secondary examinations or three ‘E’ passes at higher secondary level. Master’s applicants must possess a relevant bachelor’s degree and be under 35 years, while PhD candidates must hold a relevant master’s degree and be under 40 years.
All applicants are required to meet English language proficiency standards, either through C-1 Advanced or C-2 qualifications with a minimum ‘C’ pass, a TOEFL score above 550, or an IELTS score of 6.5 or higher. Alternatively, applicants may rely on the English requirements set by the respective university. Students applying for Chinese-language programmes must also demonstrate proficiency in Chinese through the relevant test.
Students who have taken out study loans and are regularly repaying them remain eligible for the scholarships.
The application process requires educational certificates, full transcripts, passport and national ID copies, the KOICA form, work experience documents, a medical report, and ranking papers.
Online applications close at 14:00 on 14 January, while hard-copy submissions must be completed by 13:00 on 15 January.
