His remarks were delivered during a virtual review session held last Tuesday and Wednesday, in which the Maldives presented its 13th to 15th periodic report under the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. The report, submitted in 2019, outlines measures implemented between 2011 and June of the reporting year.
Usham highlighted that upholding equality and preventing discrimination remain both legal and constitutional obligations for the Maldives. He noted that the provisions of the Convention extend to the rights of foreign workers in the country, and said the government intends to expand its efforts to improve expatriate affairs in line with modern development while ensuring adequate protection.
During the two-day session, committee members examined how the Maldives is implementing its obligations under the Convention. The Attorney General’s Office stated that the review process demonstrates the country’s ongoing commitment to eliminating racial discrimination and enhancing legal safeguards.
The committee is expected to issue its concluding observations and recommendations after assessing the Maldives’ report and the information shared during the review.
