Maldives Police alert public to “Aminiya” scam messages

The Maldives Police Service has issued a warning regarding an increase in scam messages sent under the name “Aminiya” and other random identities, falsely claiming that Maldives Customs Service has withheld packages.

According to the Police Anti-Scam Centre, the messages contain a link that directs recipients to a fake payment gateway created to steal Bank of Maldives card details. The scammers tell victims that their packages will not be delivered unless postage fees are paid through the link.

Police stated that they have observed a notable rise in such messages and urged the public to delete them immediately and report any suspicious activity. The Anti-Scam Centre said the scammers obtain sensitive card information when individuals access the fraudulent payment page.

Authorities emphasised that the number of victims remains high and noted that scam-related cases continue to result in significant financial losses. Police figures show that MVR 1.29 million was lost to scams last month, although MVR 477,263 of that amount was recovered.

The Anti-Scam Centre continues to advise the public to remain vigilant and to treat unsolicited or suspicious messages as spam.
