President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has paid tribute to the enduring legacy of Dhonbandarain, saying the hero’s wisdom and courage remain alive in the Maldives even three centuries after his historic achievements.
The President made the remarks in a post on X in Dhivehi.
He noted that it has been 281 years since the national jihad in which Dhonbandarain liberated the Maldives from invaders, known as the Holhin, who burned parts of Malé, abducted the rulers, tortured the population, and threatened them with slavery. The President concluded his post by sending greetings to the Maldivian people on Huravee Day and praying to Almighty Allah to continue blessing and prospering the nation.

First Lady Sajidha Mohamed also shared a message marking the occasion, extending her greetings to the people of the Maldives and recognising the invaluable national sacrifice of Dhonbandarain.
Huravee Day, observed on the third day of Jumaa al-Akhirah, is celebrated across the Maldives to honour the spirit of national heroism. The day serves as a reminder for Maldivians to rekindle patriotism and a deep love for their country, inspired by the courage and sacrifice of the nation’s heroes.
