UK Minister Meets First Lady to Discuss Women’s Empowerment and Partnership

The United Kingdom’s Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), Seema Malhotra MP, paid a courtesy call on First Lady Sajidha Mohamed this morning at Mulee’aage, the Official Residence of the President.

During the meeting, the First Lady expressed her appreciation to the UK government for its continued support and partnership with the Maldives, particularly in fostering economic growth. Minister Malhotra, in turn, thanked the First Lady for her active engagement and interest in areas of cooperation with the FCDO.

Discussions focused on women’s empowerment, leadership in politics and the workforce, gender-based violence, education, and climate resilience, with emphasis on the role of women in advocacy. The First Lady shared her experiences in the civil service and highlighted her commitment to promoting children’s welfare. She also outlined government policies and President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s initiatives aimed at increasing women’s participation and leadership in Parliament and Local Councils.

Minister Malhotra shared insights from her work on advancing women across sectors, stressing the importance of equality in leadership and politics. She also discussed strategies for raising awareness and educating communities on gender-related issues.

Concluding the meeting, both the First Lady and the UK Minister reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening cooperation and advancing the partnership between the Maldives and the United Kingdom.
