The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) agreed that the National Council will appoint the temporary Chairperson for the party, and not the leadership.

In a press release issued yesterday, the party said its leadership met in the afternoon to discuss the resignation of former Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, who stepped down on Sunday evening, and to determine the next steps for the party. The leadership initially considered appointing a temporary chairperson through its usual process, but decided instead to consult the National Executive Committee.

Following this consultation, it was agreed that the National Council would elect a temporary chairperson to oversee the position until a formal election is held. The party said a National Council meeting will be scheduled soon to determine the election date.

In a post on X, Fayyaz expressed gratitude to MDP members and the National Council for their efforts during his tenure. Earlier this year, he had also announced his intention to run in the 2028 presidential election.
