Health Minister Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim has said the government’s decision to form a dedicated pharmaceuticals company is aimed at developing a broader industry in the Maldives, rather than merely importing medicines.
Responding to a question from North Galolhu MP Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudu) during Tuesday’s parliamentary sitting, Nazim said that while the State Trading Organisation (STO) had previously handled the import of medicines, its diverse business portfolio made it difficult to give pharmaceuticals the specialised focus required.
Nazim noted that many countries operate state-run companies dedicated solely to pharmaceuticals, adding that the new entity would be tasked with addressing systemic challenges in the sector.
“One of the objectives of this initiative will be to conduct research, establish well-equipped laboratories, attract investors, and expand the entire sector to explore which medicines can be produced and what opportunities exist in the Maldives,” he said. He stressed that resolving medicine shortages required a “comprehensive approach” rather than simply procuring drugs for the market.
The State Pharmaceutical and Medical Supplies Corporation Limited was established by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on 7 September, with Dr Shah Mahir appointed as managing director.
During the session, MPs also raised constituency-level challenges and concerns, many focused on access to medicines.
MP Mohamed Ibrahim submitted an emergency motion urging the government to address difficulties in obtaining medicine. The motion was rejected without debate, with 36 MPs voting against and 11 in favour.
