Former President Mohamed Nasheed has called on the government to reconsider the removal of a historic banyan tree in Villimale’, highlighting its century-old significance and historical connections to past rulers and political prisoners.

The government has announced plans to remove two large banyan trees (nikagas) from Villimale’, citing structural damage caused by their roots and branches. One tree is located near the police station, while the other stands close to the water sports beach, where residents say nearby homes are being affected.

During a community meeting, residents raised concerns about the trees. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu asked those in favour of removal to indicate their support, and after a majority did so, he confirmed that the work would proceed.

Muizzu has emphasised that cutting down trees is not standard government policy, but exceptions may be made when human life is at risk. He added that the Environment Ministry has been instructed to plant at least 300 trees across Villimale’ to compensate for the removals.

The decision has sparked debate on social media, with many users echoing Nasheed’s call to preserve the island’s natural and historical heritage.
