Sri Lanka is currently facing extreme weather conditions, with the heavy rains having already risen to 69, with approximately 34 still missing, according to foreign media reports. This week’s weather-related toll is the highest since June last year, when 26 people were killed following heavy rains.
Sri Lankan security forces intensified rescue efforts on Friday, with helicopters and navy boats evacuating residents from rooftops, treetops and isolated villages, while authorities recovered additional bodies in the central region, where mudslides had buried many earlier in the week. The Disaster Management Centre reported continued heavy rainfall nationwide, with some areas receiving up to 360 millimetres in the past 24 hours.
