The Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works has announced that construction of fifty new council offices across the Maldives will begin early next year under a grant provided by the Chinese government.

Deputy Minister Yameen Abdul Wahhab confirmed the upcoming launch of the project and stated that it is being carried out with support from the China International Development Cooperation Agency. The development will involve the construction of pre-fabricated buildings under a design and build model, and the islands selected to receive the new offices have already been finalised.

According to the Ministry, Chinese officials have undertaken several months of preparatory work to ensure that the designs meet quality standards while reflecting cultural and environmental considerations. The project will include both single-storey and two-storey structures.

The initiative is progressing alongside a separate programme by Rasheed Carpentry and Construction Company, which is developing fifty-five additional council offices. The Ministry expects that, once both projects advance, three-quarters of all planned council buildings will be completed by the end of next year, strengthening administrative infrastructure across the archipelago.
