A fire broke out in the wetlands of Funaadu ward in Fuvahmulah City last night, affecting an area of grassland within the protected ecosystem.

The incident was reported at 22:48, and fire and rescue personnel from the Southern Area Command Fire Station responded to the scene.

Videos circulating on social media showed flames spreading rapidly across the wetlands, illuminating the surrounding area as responders worked to bring the blaze under control. Council representatives stated that the wetlands experience occasional fires, raising ongoing concerns about the recurring damage to the fragile environment.

The latest incident adds to a pattern of fire-related disturbances in Fuvahmulah’s wetlands. In September 2025, a fire in the Hoadhandu wetlands burned around 10 percent of the area, which officials believed was caused by a discarded cigarette. During the same month, another fire occurred in the Dhandimagu wetlands, an area that had already been affected by multiple fires earlier that year. Local authorities at the time suspected deliberate arson.
