The People’s National Congress (PNC) has appointed its parliamentary group leader, Ibrahim Falah, as campaign manager for the upcoming Local Council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections. The announcement was made on Yesterday, marking a significant organisational step for the ruling party ahead of the 2026 polls.
The ruling party, PNC has yet to reveal its candidates for either election and has not announced a date for the party’s primary. Despite this, several hopefuls have already begun preliminary campaigning within the party.
Falah, the MP for Inguraidhoo and Majority Leader of the People’s Majlis, is widely regarded as one of the most influential political figures within the PNC. His appointment signals the party’s intent to consolidate strategy and strengthen internal coordination as preparations advance.

Meanwhile, the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is intensifying its own efforts ahead of the Local Council Election, scheduled for 28 March 2026. Although the party has not formally announced its candidates, individual primary campaigns are already under way.
The mayoral race is expected to be the most closely watched contest within the MDP, featuring two prominent contenders from opposing factions. Ali Azim, backed by former president Mohamed Nasheed and recently resigned party chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, is set to challenge the current Malé Mayor, Adam Azim.
With both major parties now deep in preparation, the coming months are likely to see heightened political activity as candidates seek to secure their positions ahead of the 2026 local elections.
