A national telethon organised by Maldivian media outlets to assist communities affected by the cyclone Ditwah in Sri Lanka concluded on Monday, raising more than MVR 11 million.
The fundraising effort, led by Public Service Media (PSM) and launched on Sunday, received strong support from the public, private companies and state institutions. The contributions collected so far include MVR 10.8 million and USD 43,600.
Donation boxes placed across Malé, Hulhumalé and Vilimalé are yet to be counted, and organisers anticipate that the final amount will increase once these contributions are added. The telethon, which began on Sunday morning and was initially planned to end on Sunday night, was extended until noon on Monday to allow more people to participate.
According to the Disaster Management Centre, cyclone Ditwah has caused more than 300 deaths in Sri Lanka, with over 200 people reported missing.
