Over 30 Child Neglect Cases Recorded in October, Reveals Ministry

Statistics published by the Ministry of Social and Family Development show that 34 cases of child neglect were reported in October, making it the most common form of violence against children recorded during the month.

The Ministry reported that it received and attended to 250 cases in October. Violence against children accounted for 101 of these cases. Neglect topped the list with 34 cases involving 16 girls and 18 boys. This was followed by 23 cases of sexual abuse affecting 17 girls and six boys, and 14 cases of physical abuse involving nine girls and five boys.

Other cases included 12 instances of emotional abuse, 11 cases of bullying, four cases involving children who witnessed domestic violence, and one case each related to exploitation by organised crime groups, blackmail and cyber grooming.

The Ministry recorded 12 child rights violations during October, including six cases involving refusal to send children to school. A total of 155 children remained under state care during the month.

In addition, the Ministry documented 45 cases of gender-based or domestic violence. These included 20 cases of physical abuse, 16 cases of emotional abuse and four cases of rape.

The Ministry’s helplines – 1412 for child support and 1421 for social services – received 2,105 calls in October.
