The Ministry of Social and Family Development has intensified efforts to reinforce social protection in the Atolls, confirming that 226 social workers have been trained across 43 islands over the past two years.

The training programme forms the basis for establishing coordinated community support groups known as Ijthimaaee Badhahi Madhadhuverin (IBAMA). These groups are designed to strengthen social security at island level by operating a structured support system directly linked with relevant government agencies. Following the completion of personnel training, the government has begun formally setting up Ibama groups across the country.

The Ministry stated that the trained social workers currently represent 43 islands in eight Atolls, with plans underway to introduce Ibama groups in two more Atolls in the near future.

According to the Ministry, the initiative prioritises immediate intervention and care provision. Ongoing work includes identifying individuals and families facing vulnerability to ensure they receive timely support. At the same time, efforts continue to secure the resources needed to sustain and expand this network of community-based assistance.
