Hulhumalé Hospital has revealed that it will introduce inpatient mental health services in 2026.
Speaking on state media Public Service Media (PSM)’s programme Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem, CEO of the Male’ City Group of Hospitals (MCGH) further stated major upgrades are underway at the hospital, including the addition of 28 new beds. The facility is also preparing to start EEG and urology services, while mental health care, currently offered only on an outpatient basis, will be expanded with a dedicated inpatient ward.
As part of the expansion, a ten-storey building is being developed at Hulhumale’ Hospital.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has highlighted the government’s focus on strengthening hospitals in the Male’ area, noting the deployment of additional staff and the inclusion of multiple speciality services in next year’s budget.
The 2026 state budget allocates MVR 831 million to the health sector, including MVR 500 million for projects and MVR 331 million for operational activities. The government says the investment aims to reduce the number of Maldivians seeking medical treatment abroad, particularly in Sri Lanka and India.
While the health sector has received priority funding, the budget for housing has faced criticism for underspending relative to allocations.
