According to Immigration, the operation targeted a location where food was being prepared and delivered without adherence to basic hygiene standards, as well as several housing blocks occupied by foreigners. All 18 individuals were confirmed to be living in the Maldives illegally. Authorities noted that similar enforcement activities are underway across Malé.
The action comes in the wake of a gazette notice issued by the Ministry of Economic Development on 27 November, stating that government agencies continue to receive complaints regarding illegal trade conducted by foreigners. The ministry urged the public to report such activities.
A National Task Force has been established to inspect businesses suspected of being operated by foreigners in violation of the Foreign Investment Act, which restricts expatriates from engaging in certain business sectors. The ministry stated that these inspections aim to identify businesses using Maldivian fronts to conceal foreign ownership and to take action against violators. Investigative agencies are also working to uncover expatriate-run businesses operating under the names of Maldivians.
Police Commissioner Ismail Naveen has stated that authorities will not tolerate irregular immigrants and will take firm action against those who enter or work in the country illegally. The government has pledged to address the issue of irregular immigration within the first three years of its term.
