The United States Ambassador to the Maldives, Hugo Yon, has met senior officials from major Maldivian political parties to discuss Washington’s interests in the Maldives and its broader engagement in the Indo-Pacific region.
According to a statement shared by the US Embassy in Malé, Ambassador Yon hosted representatives from the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC), the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), as well as the Adhaalath Party (AP) and Jumhooree Party (JP). In a separate engagement, the ambassador met with the Maldives-U.S. Parliamentary Friendship Group last Thursday.
The meeting with party representatives and parliamentarians comes at a time of expanded US engagement in the Maldives. The United States recently established its first permanent Chief of Mission’s Residence in Malé—marking the first such move in six decades of diplomatic relations. Washington has described the new residence as a symbol of its long-term commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and deepening cooperation with the Maldives.
The development coincides with the 60th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between the two nations.
