Maldives Ports Limited has instructed vessels docked on the eastern side of Malé North Harbor to vacate the area, as work on the market area has commenced under the government’s Boduthakurufaanu Magu road upgrade project.
In a statement issued yesterday, Maldives Ports Limited said the second phase of the Boduthakurufaanu Magu development began last Monday and is required to be completed within three months. The authority said work in the Malé North Harbor area under this phase is scheduled to begin on Saturday.
The development work will be carried out in three segments. The first segment covers a 100-metre stretch from the eastern end of the North Harbor towards the west. Maldives Ports Limited said markings have been placed on the quay wall in areas where construction will take place, and vessels are required to vacate these sections.
All vessels currently docked in the area designated for the first segment have been instructed to relocate to alternative locations before midnight on Friday. The area is frequently congested with fishing vessels, particularly those engaged in bigeye scad fishing and single-day fishing trips that depart and return on the same day.
The section of Boduthakurufaanu Magu between the Fish Market and the presidential jetty was reopened to the public last week after three months of redevelopment work carried out under the project’s first phase.
