Felivaru Cold Storage Facility Set For Completion By June 2026
MIFCO says Felivaru cold storage facility to become operational by June 2026
The state-owned Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has announced that the country’s largest cold storage facility, currently under construction in Felivaru, Lhaviyani Atoll, is scheduled to be completed and become operational by June 2026.
The 4,000-tonne cold storage facility, awarded to Rinac India Limited in January, forms part of MIFCO’s wider programme to modernise and expand the fisheries sector.
MIFCO stated that 69 per cent of the project has been completed, including construction of the cold storage facility, a 200-tonne brine freezing system, and an 80-tonne refrigerated seawater system. Installation of machinery is currently underway, while the remaining works include setting up the power plant and completing saltwater connections.
Once operational, the facility is expected to increase fish storage capacity and strengthen export capabilities during peak fishing seasons, supporting efforts to secure improved prices in international markets.
In parallel, fish processing plants are being developed to enable the export of higher-value products. The government has dredged 5.7 hectares of land in Felivaru and completed three jetties designated for general operations, fish handling, and international exports.
As the largest fisheries facility in the Maldives, the development of Felivaru is expected to contribute substantially to the growth of the sector and reinforce the country’s position in the global seafood market.
