ERA Opens Public Review of EIA for Hulhumalé Road Works
The Environmental Regulation Authority (ERA) has opened the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report for the proposed Hulhumalé road works to public review and comment.
In a post shared on X, ERA said the EIA assesses the potential environmental and socio-economic impacts of the road works planned for Hulhumalé Phases I, II and III. The project covers internal and connecting road networks intended to serve as primary transport corridors for residential, institutional and commercial areas, including several remaining priority roads, particularly near residential buildings where improved access is required.

According to the report, the assessment identifies a range of potential impacts, especially during the construction phase. These include health and safety risks to workers and pedestrians, restricted access for road users and services, disturbance to residents and businesses due to noise and construction activities, and the removal of vegetation in affected areas.
The EIA proposes several mitigation measures, including minimising high noise-generating activities during night-time hours, using low-noise equipment, and strictly adhering to health and safety protocols throughout construction. The report also stresses the need to properly brief workers on safety procedures and to operate heavy machinery with care to prevent accidents.
ERA has set Wednesday this week as the deadline for submitting public comments on the Hulhumalé road works EIA. The authority has asked members of the public to send their comments by email to eca@era.gov.mv, and to clearly state the name of the report or include the relevant link for reference.
In addition to the Hulhumalé road works, ERA has also opened public consultations on several other EIA reports, including those for the proposed Maxx Royal Maldives resort development, the Apollo 1000 housing units project in Hulhumalé, a proposed land reclamation and fuel farm development in Thilafushi, and other projects. Deadlines for submitting comments on these projects vary, with all falling before the end of the month.
