The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has announced that garage permits will no longer need to be submitted along with the documentation related to garages when registering a land vehicle.

In a statement published today, the ministry clarified the announcement for the regulation updates made on Monday, December 22. The ministry said that while having a garage space remains mandatory for land vehicle registration, the administrative requirements have been simplified to make the process easier for the public.

Previously, registering a garage required three documents:

  •  a permit to use the building as a garage from the Malé City Council or Housing Development Corporation (HDC)
  • a vehicle garage permit from the same authorities
  • a letter confirming the building owner has no objection, along with proof of ownership.

However, from 1 January 2026, vehicle owners will need only a permit to use the building as a garage from the Malé City Council or HDC, a letter confirming the building owner has no objection, and proof of ownership. A vehicle garage permit will no longer be required, the ministry said.

The change aims to reduce the need for multiple permits from different agencies and to address complaints regarding the transfer of vehicles registered before the garage requirement was introduced in 2009. Vehicles registered in the Malé Zone will be able to change ownership without additional garage documents.
