Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has issued a warning against renting social housing units to immigrants in Hulhumalé, saying it will take action against violations.
In an announcement issued last night, HDC said it has received complaints that some recipients of social housing flats are not living in the units allocated to them and are instead leasing them to foreigners. The flats were awarded to applicants assessed as most in need.
HDC said it will terminate agreements signed with owners found to be renting out their social housing flats to immigrants.
The Hiyaa Towers in Hulhumalé Phase II have the highest number of social housing units being leased in this manner, with residents raising concerns about the large expatriate population in two-room apartments.
The issue of government social housing units being rented at high prices has periodically drawn public attention. HDC reiterated that subleasing violates the agreement with beneficiaries.
Under the 2022 regulations, entire social housing apartments cannot be rented out, although a single room may be leased.
